Living with disability at university

Laws to defend rights: Several laws have been passed to protect students with disabilities and give them the same rights as able-bodied students.

  • In February 2005, the law on "Equal rights and opportunities, participation and citizenship for people with disabilities" was enacted.
  • In September 2007, the "University and Disability" charter was signed by the French government and the Conference of University Presidents.
  • A second "Grandes Écoles / Disability" charter between the French government and the Conférence des grandes écoles was adopted in May 2008.

These two charters aim to better support for students with disabilities at universities and grandes écolesby introducing a host structurestudent follow-up throughout their schooling by adapting a personalised training plan for each student.

The University of Guyana's disability relay and the University Service for Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion (SUMPPS) work as a team to enable each student to benefit from adjustments. These can take a variety of forms: additional one-third composition time, material assistance (loan of a computer, tablet, specific software, etc.) or human assistance (secretary, note taker), or adaptation of the presentation of subjects (enlarged text fonts). In addition, a disability adviser works at the DOSIP reception desk, so don't hesitate to contact him. He is responsible forcoordinating the various actions on your behalf and acting as your main point of contact to iron out your problems.

Contact DOSIP/Relais Handicap as soon as possible to anticipate your needs.
To request specific accommodation for your disability, make an appointment with the doctor and nurse at the University Service for Preventive Medicine and Health Promotion (SUMPPS) to define the accommodation best suited to your disability (this procedure must be repeated each academic year).
