Le doctorat

Lhe doctorate is a high-level academic qualification that is internationally recognised. The period of preparation for a doctorate, which lasts between 3 and 6 years, is often referred to as "the thesis", and involves in-depth research work culminating in the writing of a dissertation, which is defended before an academic jury. At the end of this process, the title of Doctor (or PhD in English Philosophiae Doctor) is granted.

Supervision and support for doctoral students

Doctoral students benefit from personalised supervision by experienced research supervisors, as well as access to research resources and infrastructure. We also offer cross-disciplinary training to develop essential skills such as scientific communication, project management and innovation.

Conditions for access to doctoral studies at the University of Guyana

Enrolment in the first year of the doctorate is decided by the head of the establishment on the recommendation of the Director of the Doctoral School, after receiving the opinion of the thesis director and the director of the research unit or team on the quality of the project and the conditions under which it will be carried out.

To be registered as a doctoral student you must :

Hold a national master's degree

Hold a national master's degree or another degree conferring the grade of master, following a course of training or professional experience establishing your aptitude for research. If this diploma requirement is not met, the head of the establishment may, by dispensation and on the recommendation of the Doctoral School Council, authorise the registration of :

  • Candidates who have studied abroad at an equivalent level ;

Contact a laboratory at the University of Guyana

The doctoral project begins with the potential candidate contacting the laboratories (provide a link here) of the University of Guyana (UG) or a partner laboratory (provide a link here) of the Doctoral School. This process will help to identify a thesis director for the definition of the research topic and will guarantee rigorous monitoring of the progress of the work.

For two consecutive years, the University of Guyana has offered seven (7) doctoral contract grants:

  • Two (2) funded by the Ministry;
  • Two (2) from the "Amazon Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainable Innovation" (AIBSI) project (provide a link);
  • Three (3) from the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES).

This new funding dynamic gives laboratories the opportunity to propose research topics directly.

Proposals for thesis topics are posted online on theDoctoral Schoolfrom March of each calendar year.
