Faced with the challenges of climate change and demographic pressure, the sustainable management of Guyana's forests is becoming a crucial issue. From 20 to 24 October 2025<\/strong>, l\u2019University of Guyana<\/strong> welcomes international symposium on forest management modelling under the impact of global change<\/strong>, bringing together researchers from all over the world to rethink the sustainability of forestry.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

A major event for forestry research in French Guiana<\/h3>\n

French Guiana, a vast territory covering 8.4 million hectares, 96 % of which is covered by forest, is a global biodiversity hotspot with over 1,800 tree species.<\/p>\n

The timber industry is a mainstay of the region's economy, with almost 80,000 m\u00b3 of timber harvested each year from the Permanent Forest Estate (DFP), managed by the Office National des For\u00eats (ONF).<\/p>\n

Faced with growing demand and a target to triple production by 2030, French Guiana needs to rethink its forest management models. Climate change, and in particular the intensification of the dry seasons, is accentuating the need for a scientific and predictive approach.<\/p>\n

Two research projects at the heart of the conference<\/h3>\n

This conference marks the official launch of two major projects supported by the CNRS, the University of Guyana (UG) and the AIBSI:<\/p>\n

M2D2GF - Mathematical modelling of forest dynamics and management.<\/strong>
\nThis project aims to develop mathematical models to simulate the growth, regeneration and management of tropical forests under demographic pressure. It provides decision-making tools for the sustainable and balanced exploitation of Guiana's forest resources.<\/p>\n

ModTrans2C - Transport model under climate change<\/strong>
\nThis second project explores the impact of climate change on the movement of matter and energy in forest ecosystems. The aim is to understand how longer dry seasons affect the dynamics of flows and the resilience of forests.<\/p>\n

An international, multidisciplinary event<\/h3>\n

Organised by Mr Louison and Mr Omrane, the conference will bring together internationally renowned researchers and lecturers in ecology, economics and mathematics. Participating institutions include<\/p>\n
