« Dura Lex Sed Lex » : La BU sort un nouveau jeu sur le droit des images

To help Master's and PhD students make the right use of images in research, the university library is distributing a new board game on intellectual property, with financial support from GIS URFIST.

Entitled "Dura Lex Sed Lex" (which means "Hard is the law, but it's the law" in Latin), this game is designed to help students better assimilate the knowledge imparted in training courses on legal issues relating to copyright and image rights.

Also developed in digital format, it will be officially presented at the Journées de l'Agence Bibliographique de l'Enseignement Supérieur (JABES) in Montpellier on 21 and 22 June 2022, and at the Journées nationales du Formateur (JNF) organised by the Association des Directeurs de Bibliothèque Universitaire (ADBU) on 4 and 5 July 2022.

The result of local cooperation, this game was created by the deputy director of the university library, Marie Latour, under the scientific supervision of Rose-Marie Borges, lecturer in private law at the University of Clermont Auvergne. It was the winner of the call for projects launched in 2019 by the URFIST Scientific Interest Group, which made it possible to fund its graphic design by the professional graphic designer in French Guiana, Bénédicte Sauvage. Released at the time of the 2020 confinement, it could not initially be used in face-to-face training with students. This led to the creation of a digital version, which was produced by Lilian Chevalier, a secondary school mathematics teacher at Paul Kappel College.

The result of a long series of eight board games and one video game created by the University Library of French Guiana, "Dura Lex Sed Lex" is also freely available on the Zenodo open archive platform under a Creative Commons BY NC SA licence. This non-restrictive licence allows anyone to download, modify, use or distribute the files, provided that the University of Guyana is cited, that the game is not used for commercial purposes, and that any modified versions are distributed under the correct licence.

Will the game be as successful as its predecessors, which have been reused by over thirty French universities? Only time will tell.
