Natália, étudiante en mobilité à l’UG

Every year, the University of Guyana welcomes several international students from partner countries (e.g. the Americas, Africa, Europe, etc.).

L nternational mobility offers students the opportunity to discover a new culture, learn new subjects and meet new people. This is the case of Natália, a student who came to spend a semester at our university as part of the PUMA programme. She tells us about her experience.

My name is Natália. I come from Belo Horizonte, a city in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil. I have a degree equivalent to a bachelor's (Bacharelado) in library science. I also took part in the PUMA (Programme universitaire.

I've been thinking about international mobility for a long time. I regularly found out about the schemes available at my home university. However, in Brazil, we don't always have the opportunity to do university exchanges, because of the age limits imposed and the travel costs that are not covered by the mobility grants. The PUMA programme, on the other hand, offers more opportunities and has the advantage of not imposing any constraints on students.

Why did you choose French Guiana for your work placement?

I studied French for several years. However, I never had the opportunity to travel to a French-speaking country to develop my language skills.

French Guiana offers just such an opportunity. Being a French-speaking region, it was only natural that I wanted to go there. I was able to learn about other aspects of the region, such as its rich culture and magnificent Amazon rainforest.

It's a good thing that the University of Guyana is taking part in exchanges as part of the PUMA programme.

How long did your placement last? What did you learn during your placement?

My university stay lasted about 3 months. It was very short. However, I really enjoyed the experience. I developed a number of skills, but the one that I most enjoyed improving was the French language. It's rewarding to be able to immerse yourself in a language to develop your skills. In that sense, I hope to be able to come back soon, perhaps for a second exchange during my Masters?

However, there are certain constraints to be taken into account. Unfortunately, French Guiana is a very controlled territory for the Brazilians. It's a shame because our country is right next door. To get there, we need a visa, which is often difficult to obtain. But if I'm given the opportunity to come back, I'll be happy to do so.

The people I met during my stay were really friendly. I have fond memories of it. I made friends that I'll keep in my heart.

Tell us what you will remember about your stay...

I had a great time on the Rorota trail, on the Savane-roche Virginie in Régina and on the Îles du salut. Incredible moments of discovery. But I'll never forget my first bike ride, in the centre of Cayenne, where I got sunburnt. It was memorable.

Your career at the UG?

The Bachelor of Arts (L3) at the University of Guyana enabled me to learn more about French literature and linguistics. I was made to feel very welcome, and the teachers were very kind and understanding. They helped to make my experience a pleasant one. Particularly during the lessons, where the language barrier affected my understanding. There were often important little details that I couldn't understand.

My experience at the UG has also been marked by events.

I took part in the first Erasmus Day's organised at the University of Guyana. I had a lot of fun during the games organised by the International Relations officers. The day was an opportunity to meet other international students.

There was also a visit from the Minister for Higher Education. I was impressed, she listened to the students. I enjoyed being there that day. Even though I didn't interact directly with Madame Retailleau (the current Minister for Higher Education and Research).

What are your career plans?

When I return to Brazil, my ambition is to do a Master's degree. At the same time, I want to start a professional career as a librarian.

Exchanges abroad are recognised in the professional world. They offer more opportunities.

In my case, this cultural openness is an asset for my future career.
