As part of the "Borders, Circulations, Interculturalities and Human-Milieu Interactions" seminar, the LEEISA and MINEA laboratories are organising a conference entitled "The production of academic knowledge on the Guiana Shield: the Border Studies Graduate Programme". Presented by Paulo Gustavo Pellegrino Correa, it will be held on Monday 6 November 2023, from 6pm to 8pm in room F108.
The aim of our conference is to present the production of knowledge on the Guiana Shield thanks to this postgraduate programme in border studies. The PPGEF has been in existence for six years. It is undoubtedly one of the most important centres for the production of knowledge on the north of South America, thanks to the work of its researchers and postgraduate students. We will present some of these results and the networks established with the region through projects.
Finally, in our presentation, we will take the opportunity to show how cross-border relations are on the agenda of discussions on international relations. In addition, how the PPGEF envisages future studies on the political reconfiguration of the Western Hemisphere in the 21st century, taking into account, for example: 1) international flows in the Guiana region, people, goods and services; 2) regional integration strategies; 3) borders as places of passage, but also of interdiction; 4) the role of regional and international security; 5) biopiracy; 6) the role of protected areas, in multiple fields of analysis; 7) public international law, indigenous issues and the effectiveness of minority rights in relation to borders.
A few words about the speaker
Paulo Gustavo Pellegrino Correa holds a doctorate in political science. He was a visiting scholar at the University of Waikato, New Zealand (2012), and a visiting professor at the University of the West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago (2017). Professor of International Relations at the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP) and permanent professor of the Postgraduate Programme in Border Studies (PPGEF) at the same institution. He was vice-president of cooperation and inter-institutional relations at UNIFAP and former director of the Brazilian Defence Studies Association (ABED). He is currently coordinator of the State Plan for the Development and Integration of the Amapá Border Strip.
