L he Health department organises the teaching of the PACES (Première Année Commune des Etudes de Santé) in partnership with the universities of the Antilles and Bordeaux. At the end of this year of training, students sit a competitive entrance exam which, if they are successful, enables them to study in various medical fields: medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and midwifery. It also offers university degrees specialising in tropical dermatology, HIV, care in tropical environments and epidemiology.

The number of places (Numerus Clausus) specific to the University of Guyana is set annually by the Ministries of Health and Higher Education.
