Centre for International Cooperation in Agricultural Research for Development (CIRAD)

CIRAD conducts research in French Guiana on the sustainable management of tropical forest ecosystems, biodiversity, forest carbon, agroforestry and perennial crops such as cocoa, coffee and rubber. The institution is also working on breeding systems adapted to tropical environments.

CIRAD has been working closely with INRAE, IRD, CNRS, AgroParisTech and the University of French Guiana for almost forty years.

It has around thirty employees in French Guiana, spread over four sites: the Kourou campus, the wood laboratory, the Combi agronomic station (125 hectares) and the Paracou forestry site (5,700 hectares).

French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS)

CNRS has had a presence in French Guiana since 1986, conducting research into Amazonian biodiversity, interactions between societies and environments and coastal dynamics.

The organisation coordinates the Nouragues scientific station, which was opened in 1986. Its local presence was strengthened in 2002 with the establishment of a regional office in Cayenne.

The CNRS is co-supervisor of two laboratories at the University of Guyana: the ECOFOG joint research unit, dedicated to forest ecology, and the LEEISA joint research unit, dedicated to social, environmental and coastal sciences. This unit is also the local representative of the CNRS.

CNRS is also a founding member of the Amazon Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainable Innovation (AIBSI).
