Presentation

Since the start of the 2019 academic year, the MAE Master's degree has been offered at the University of Guyana (DFR SJE) in partnership with the University of Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne (IAE Paris/Sorbonne Business School), the University of La Rochelle (IAE de la Rochelle), the IAE France network and the Collectivité Territoriale de Guyane (CTG).

In this way, the three universities are working together to train tomorrow's managers locally. The 1st year Master's degree is run by IAE La Rochelle (dual registration with UG and ULR). The 2nd year Master's degree is run by IAE Paris/Sorbonne Business School (dual registration with UG and UP1).

The courses are taught in French Guiana (Cayenne Troubiran campus) by teachers from the partner universities, both face-to-face and online. At the end of the 2-year course, students are graduates exclusively of the University Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne (IAE de Paris/Sorbonne Business School). The MAE Master's degree is available as a standard initial course (with an end-of-year work placement) or as a sandwich course (apprenticeship or professionalisation contract).

The MAE master's degree is the historic and flagship degree of the IAE France network (https://www.iae-france.fr/). The Instituts d'Administration des Entreprises (IAE) within universities provide training in all areas of management. These university schools are recognised both academically and professionally, with some of the highest rates of integration into the job market, benefiting from networks of former graduates and are at the heart of current events and management practices. The IAE Paris/Sorbonne Business School is regularly singled out for the excellence of its diplomas and courses, with numerous awards, distinctions and rankings in various league tables.

Objectives

The aim of the MAE Masters is twofold:

  • to give students or professionals who have never studied management but who have skills in science, law or the humanities a real general knowledge of business and management;
  • enable them to acquire or consolidate management skills

This complementary generalist course is designed to enable students and professionals to gain an understanding of all the major functions of a company by imparting the basic knowledge and concepts of the main management disciplines, familiarising them with the techniques needed to practise these disciplines and putting them into perspective with the local economic and legal environment.

It enables students to obtain a dual degree that facilitates access to positions requiring a strategic vision of the company and its organisation, and gives them a wider range of options in their professional lives. Particularly valued by companies at the recruitment stage, or subsequently as a career accelerator towards management positions, dual skills give these students a real advantage that makes all the difference to recruiters.

Students are therefore immersed in the main areas of business expertise: financial management, sales management, marketing, legal and tax management, team management, leadership, accounting, management control, production and logistics management, human resources management, etc. Some courses and assessments address the specific features of Guyana's economic environment. Consequently, in the application/admission phase, it is important to have a clear and coherent career plan, highlighting a career path with professional and academic experience.

The diploma also enables students to take up executive-level positions in other types of organisation (public or private companies, associations, government departments, local authorities, NGOs, public institutions, etc.) or to set up their own business (self-employment, setting up companies, crafts, entrepreneurship, etc.).

The acquisition and mastery of skills is built around four major pillars:

  1. A teaching staff made up of teachers and professionals from a wide range of academic backgrounds, whose level of qualification is unrivalled in the region.
  2. Work placements, sandwich courses and work experience, particularly through the involvement of companies and partners from the University of Guyana and the University Apprentice Training Centre (CFA-U). This accumulation of skills through work placements will enable students to play an active role in the development of French Guiana (territorial anchoring), with positions/functions of responsibility, decision-making latitude and/or support for decision-making in these organisations during their apprenticeships. Therefore, the internship or work-study themes/activities described in the job descriptions must be at executive or senior executive level and cover one of the skills set out below.
  3. Innovative teaching methods using corporate or business games, role-playing, individual or group work and presentations, e-learning portals with videos, MCQs, conferences, remote access to libraries, etc. This teaching method aims to build synergies, team spirit and interpersonal skills.
  4. Organisational proximity in the form of a teaching and administrative team based around small numbers of students in French Guyana. The MAE Masters is supervised by dedicated staff who understand local educational issues. Students therefore have the opportunity to remain in their local environment and keep their ties with the local community, while still benefiting from a recognised first-rate education.

On completion of this generalist course, students will be able to :

Programme

Case studies are used throughout the course. This inductive method enables students to move from the concrete to the conceptual through the study of real-life business situations. The variety of backgrounds (engineers, lawyers, literary scholars....) in small groups (maximum 24 participants per group) helps to reinforce the original nature of this teaching method. The teaching is provided by a high-quality teaching staff made up of lecturers from IAE Paris - Sorbonne Business School, IAE La Rochelle, other IAE members of the IAE France network and the University of Guyana, as well as professional contributors.
