L he Department of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences at the University of Guyana is clearly on the path of modernisation that the world of research and education is currently engaged in. As a major component of the university, the LLSH department is determined to offer a range of courses that meet the intellectual, practical and cultural requirements of a changing society.

Activities

The curriculum is organised into 6 semesters, over 3 years, at the end of which the Bachelor's degree is awarded. Semester 1 is a common core for all students. Students choose their major (or stream) from the second semester of the first year (from January). Changes of direction are possible with the help of teachers and the guidance service. Each semester is organised into core teaching units (UEO), pathway units (UEP) and complementary teaching units (UEC). Masters courses are also organised into semesters.

Roles and missions

  • The course focuses on the acquisition of knowledge and methods not only in the core disciplines of literature, linguistics, modern foreign languages, history and anthropology, but also in innovative disciplines such as computer science.
  • The course is designed to give students a taste for culture through art lessons and knowledge of the cultures and societies of the Guyana Plateau.
  • Thanks to a number of local and international partnerships, the DFR Lettres et Sciences humaines provides students with a solid basic education in tune with today's world, and has set up specific systems to support students: tutoring, work experience placements in close collaboration with the SCUIO.

Priority

  • Develop analytical and expressive skills, both written and oral
  • Giving students a general culture (literary, linguistic, cultural)
  • Develop students' independence, versatility and ability to work as part of a team
  • To facilitate the professional and cultural integration of students, taking into account the specific needs of regional and international realities in terms of training, exchanges and professional prospects.
  • Implementing projects, leaving plenty of room for creativity.
