N Shilitiawamo, a young Kali'na girl born in Ulapa, was not at all prepared to marry at a very young age. Her life in Kumaka and Kamalakuli in no way foreshadowed such a destiny. So, despite her mother's advice to protect her and prepare her for later life, Shilitiawamo was forced to comply with the traditional rite of passage for young Kali'na girls around marriage. The weight and voice of the uwapotosan (elders) represented very important moral values for the community. Pipi, her grandmother, a stern woman determined to marry off her granddaughter at the age of 14, planned a whole ceremony. Tradition, Dreams, Reality, Love, Spirituality, Art, Culture and Imagination form the basis of our story.
A few words about the authorMireille Ho-Sack-Wa/Badamie is from French Guiana and belongs to the Johannes-Kayamaré family, a member of the Kali'na-Tilewuyu nation. A doctoral student at the University of Guyana, her work focuses on a comparative study of Amerindian beadwork. She has given lectures in Guyana, Canada and Guadeloupe. Her scientific papers and publications include: Arts de Guyane; Résilience généalogique des prénoms Kali'na; Narration amérindienne poétique sur Damas; Les Nouvelles tendances de décolonisation et critiques culturelles de l'Art à travers l'identité amérindienne (at Macte); l'Acte philosophique scientifique, poétique, artistique Amérindien; la Perception du carnaval chez les Amérindiens de Kamalakuli; "L'Amérindien et son rapport au Touloulou, Akamaï". She has just published her very first book: Kaleda "The Young Daughter of Ipoloman "This is the rite of passage for young Amerindian Kali'na girls.
