On Tuesday 14 May 2024, the President of the University of Guyana, Laurent LINGUET, had the honour of welcoming Gutemberg Vilhena Silva, Director of the Research Support Foundation of the State of Amapá (FAPEAP), accompanied by the Secretary of State for Culture of Amapá. The visit is part of a series of initiatives to strengthen cross-border collaboration in research and development.

Lt the meeting, Mr Gutemberg Vilhena Silva presented the invitation to the next Joint Cross-Border Commission (CMT), to be held in Macapá from 11 to 13 June 2024. The main objective of this commission is to define a joint strategy for international relations with a view to the forthcoming Brazilian calls for projects, in particular the Amazônia+10 initiative. This strategy aims to identify common research themes in crucial areas such as health, the environment, the green economy and sustainable development.

With this in mind, a working meeting was held on 30 May 2024. Researchers had the opportunity to discuss and propose potential topics to be addressed and presented at the WCL. The discussions were fruitful and led to the identification of promising avenues for collaboration.

On 6 June 2024, a videoconference meeting was held with the President of the University of Guyana and representatives from the universities of Suriname and Guyana. The aim of the meeting was to establish a common strategy for a joint call for projects, particularly under the Interreg Amazon Cooperation Programme (PCIA), thereby strengthening academic and scientific links in the region.

The visit also provided an opportunity to promote EXPOFEIRA, a major event taking place from 30 August to 7 September 2024. This event is an ideal platform for showcasing research results and innovative projects developed in the region.

Finally, an important discussion took place on the organisation of COP 30, scheduled to take place in Belém in 2025. Participants exchanged ideas on how to prepare for this global event, focusing on regional collaboration and the presentation of sustainable and innovative projects.

This visit marked an important step in strengthening relations between Guyana and Amapá, paving the way for new opportunities for collaboration and development in the years to come. The University of Guyana looks forward to future initiatives and collaborations that will emerge from these fruitful exchanges.
