Rencontres littéraires : Hélène FERRARINI, Allons enfants de la Guyane

The Commission Culture is organising a monthly literary event: the Rencontres Littéraires. This new edition will take place on Tuesday 15 November 2022 from 4pm to 6pm at the University Library. Come and listen to Hélène FERRARINI who will present her book " Allons enfants de la Guyane. Educating, evangelising and colonising Amerindians in the Republic.

H élène FERRARINI will be accompanied by Alexis Tiouka, an indigenous activist and lawyer, author of the preface to the book presented, and of the book "Petit guerrier pour la paix", "les luttes amérindiennes racontées à la jeunesse" ("Little warrior for peace"). (and to all those who are curious)and Guillaume Kouyouri, a Native American activist and poet. Both are former residents of the HOMES and witnesses to this history.

Summary of the book

In French Guiana, for decades - and still today in Saint-Georges-de-l'Oyapock - children from different indigenous communities grew up in "Indian homes", boarding schools run by Catholic congregations. The policy of forced assimilation thus pursued by the French state with the support of the clergy attests to the colonial persistence of this young overseas department. In an in-depth investigation combining archives and personal accounts, Hélène Ferrarini lifts the veil on a hitherto ignored history in which the words of the former boarders are finally finding a place.
