On 28 June, the University of Guyana took a decisive step forward in its development with the signing of its Contract of Objectives, Resources and Performance (COMP).
The ceremony was attended by such eminent figures as Sylvie Retailleau, Minister for Higher Education and Research, Anne-Sophie Barthez, Director General of Higher Education and Professional Integration, Philippe Dulbecco, Rector of the Académie de Guyane, and Laurent Linguet, President of the Université de Guyane.
This contract marks an overhaul of the dialogue between the university, the rectorate and the ministry. It establishes a clear and identifiable institutional signature, strengthening the autonomy and responsibility of the University of Guyana.
A tool for accountability and management
Launched in June 2023, the COMP has been tested by 34 pioneering establishments that have received additional funding. A post-test evaluation will be carried out to measure the results obtained and adjust strategies accordingly.
Clear and ambitious objectives
The University of Guyana's COMP has six objectives:
Ecological transition and sustainable development : The University of Guyana is committed to building a sustainable development policy based on the following strategic orientations: - Developing teaching on the challenges of the ecological transition and raising awareness among students and staff of the need to reduce their carbon footprint. - Reducing our ecological footprint by applying sound operational, management and governance practices.
Research and innovation : The UG is committed to supporting the maturation of the research results of its doctoral students and teacher-researchers by advancing the levels of technological maturity and the creation of spin-offs (innovative companies). This project will be based on the recruitment of a maturation manager.
Adapting the training offer : The UG is committed to adapting its programmes to meet the specific needs of its region and to training more students in sectors where there is a shortage of students: creation of a Master's degree in Civil Engineering in September 2023, a Bachelor's degree in Sports and Physical Education and an increase in the intake capacity of the Marketing Techniques degree and the Professional Degree in Management and Organisation Management (MGO).
Student well-being and success : the UG is committed to giving students access to a wider range of specialised care: psychologist, dentist, ophthalmologist, gynaecologist, etc. The UG is also committed to implementing a system for valuing and recognising student commitment, such as "ECL Engagement", and to funding student jobs dedicated to all forms of tutoring.
Improving management : The UG undertakes to implement its multi-annual property strategy plan (SPSI). It undertakes to ensure that each training component has a contract of objectives and resources (COM), which will provide a basis for budgetary dialogue.
School strategy : The UG is committed to the creation of a Graduate School that will involve all the laboratories in the provision of the UG's masters and doctorate courses and will build on existing partnerships with research organisations, companies and other local players.
