The University of Guyana sees Student Involvement as a complementary foundation to student training, a vector for social cohesion and inclusion, professional integration and the development of civic values. These skills can now be developed throughout their course of study.

L ocial and societal responsibility, a culture of commitment and entrepreneurship are important values and skills that the University of Guyana wishes to instil in its students. Among the various ways of validating student commitment, the University of Guyana offers two schemes for recognising student commitment:

Awarding bonus points for average performance

Applicable to bachelor's and master's degree courses
Background note

There is a simple way for students to apply to have their student commitment recognised, using the form at download here or collect them from the Student Life Office.

Principles

  • The application form can be downloaded from the University website or collected from the Student Life Office.
  • The Student Life Office [BVE] uses a specific evaluation grid for each type of commitment.
  • A committee made up of members from the university community and civil society will decide each semester on the allocation of the bonus.
  • The commitment will be recognised if it is in line with article 11 _Recognition of student commitment _ of the General Terms and Conditions for the Assessment of Knowledge and Skills [MGCCC].
  • At the beginning of each semester, the student must submit a request to the BVE and work out the details of his or her commitment.

Awarding ECTS credits

L3 students in semester 1 and L2 students in semester 2

  • An ECL Engagement Etudiant.e is deployed by the University of Guyana, which offers courses and training that will enable students to build up their points grid.
  • The ECL, known as "student commitment", regularly offers courses and training that are part of the evaluation grid (Sustainable Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, training for association leaders, etc.).
  • The ECL "student engagement" is open to L3 students in semester 1 and L2 students in the second semester.

NB. For the second and third years of the bachelor's degree, in the same semester during the current academic year, the recognition of student commitment cannot be combined with ECL "student commitment" registration.

What types of commitment are recognised?

  • Students who are active volunteer members of an association or student union (excluding any political or ideological commitment). The association must be governed by the law of 1st July 1901.
  • Students elected to the University of Guyana councils,
  • Students with a professional activity (employee or student entrepreneur).
  • Student volunteer firefighters.
  • Students carrying out a military activity in the operational reserve
  • Students on a civic service assignment.
  • Student volunteers in the armed forces

How is commitment recognised?

  • By deliberation of the committee, in compliance with the GCCCMs validated by the components, by a bonus of up to 0.5 points on the average per semester.
  • Validation of the ECL, leading to ECTS credits. The student submits a report written as part of the ECL.

What are the registration and assessment procedures?

In the case of a commitment :

  1. Complete the application form for recognition of commitment before 20 October (for the first registration campaign) or 30 March (for the second registration campaign),
  2. Attach the required documents to the application,
  3. Take an active part in events organised by the University of French Guyana (the new academic year, the student village, "Thursday lectures", literary events, cultural outings, forums, etc.).

Student associations
