Rudmila – Apprendre un métier grâce au service civique

Rudmila, 20, a PIETAS Masters student at ESPE, tells us about her experience of civic service with DOSIP. Portrait of a student committed to the community.

Introduce yourself.

My name is Rudmila, I'm 20 years old and I've got my baccalauréat in literature, specialising in law and the major issues of the contemporary world. I went on to study for a degree in social sciences and social work at the University of Guyana. I've been a student at the University of Guyana for 4 years and I'm currently doing a Masters in Education and Social Work Practice and Engineering. As my background indicates, I want to work in the social field.

Can you tell us about civic service?

In my opinion, civic service is more than just what you see written everywhere. It's an opportunity to join a structure or organisation with which you share the same values, but also to develop new and rewarding skills. The aim is to be able to make a commitment that is close to your heart and to help in the service of the general interest, while at the same time receiving financial compensation.

Why did you apply for civic service at DOSIP?

I applied for the job at the DOSIP (Direction de l'Orientation des Stages et de l'Insertion Professionnelle) because it was the department that corresponded best to me, given my university background linked to professional integration, but also the one that best met my expectations in terms of my career plan. I really wanted to be considered for the job. It was a tailor-made civic service for me, because professional integration is one of the aspects of my training and I still come into contact with the university environment every day. For me, the DOSIP was the best service to give me a new experience in line with my professional goals.

What was your mission and what are your current projects?

During my civic service, I was in charge of the ministerial survey on the professional integration of former graduates from the University of Guyana, and I also provided support for other DOSIP missions, such as careers advice. Thanks to this great opportunity and the confidence of my superiors, I was able to take charge of a project and manage it independently: I helped to organise the Fête de la Science. I was mainly in charge of the Science Village, which took place during the week of 7 to 15 October 2017 on the University's Troubiran Campus.Wanting to become a project manager in local development and social action, this experience has only confirmed my career choice.

What have you learnt during your civic service and do you think this experience will be useful to you in the future?

Thanks to my civic service, I've discovered the administrative professions and developed a particular taste for them, so I'm keen to prepare for the administrative entrance exams, so I'm going to finish my master's degree at the ESPE and seize all the opportunities that will be offered to me in my chosen fields.

Any advice for UG students?

I don't necessarily have any advice to give students, but I would encourage them to diversify, to decompartmentalise our learning in order to have this openness to the world that is so beneficial to the development of our region.
