On 13 April 2018, the University of Guyana took part in the International "Scholarship fair" 2018, an annual event organised this year jointly by the OAS (Organisation of American States) and the Brazilian Embassy in Suriname. It took place at the KKF (Suriname Chamber of Commerce and Factories) in Paramaribo.
L' International Scholarship Fair is an annual event that gives embassies and international organisations resident and non-resident in Suriname the opportunity to publicise the scholarship programmes they offer to Surinamese nationals as part of their bilateral or multilateral cooperation agreements to support the country's sustainable development portfolio.
In order to ensure the continuity and coherence of the activities of the French Embassy in Suriname in the field of education, the French representation chose to participate actively in this event by involving the University of Guyana. The team was made up of representatives from the embassy, the Alliance Française, Campus France, volunteers and 3 representatives from the University of Guyana.
An exhibition to boost the appeal of the University of French Guyana
During this Scholarship Fair, the team from the University of French Guiana was able to present the courses offered by the University of French Guiana, explain how the French university system works, explain how to enrol in French universities in general and the University of French Guiana in particular, and provide feedback to Surinamese students through the presence of a Surinamese student studying at the University of French Guiana.
The event was well attended, with representatives from the Organisation of American States, the Brazilian embassy, the French embassy, the US embassy, the UK embassy, the Indian embassy, the Thai embassy, the Indonesian embassy, the Chinese embassy, the European Union, the Inter American Institute for Agriculture (IICA), the British High Commission and the Dutch embassy.
The Scholarship Fair provided an opportunity to raise awareness of the University of Guyana and its courses. The event also provided an opportunity to see how interested Surinamese students are in the University of Guyana, to establish good links with the French Embassy in Suriname and to position the University of Guyana in a neighbouring country.
