Valorisation des Ressources Naturelles : De la Recherche scientifique à la Faisabilité socio-économique, L’exemple de l’Immortelle de Corse

The UMR QUALISUD invites you to a conference entitled "Valorisation des Ressources Naturelles: De la Recherche scientifique à la Faisabilité socio-économique, L'exemple de l'Immortelle de Corse", to be held on Tuesday 21 January from 6pm to 8pm in Amphi A.

L his conference will be led by Jean Costa, Professor Emeritus, University of Corsica, UMR CNRS 6134, Natural Products Chemistry Laboratory.

Perfumed, aromatic and medicinal plants (PPAM) are at the heart of the debate on sustainable development. Over the last 30 years, natural substances have undergone considerable development. Today, the vast majority of formulations are plant-based, whereas in the past they were based on the massive use of petroleum-based mineral oils.

With this in mind, much of our research is aimed at providing objective scientific information to help :

  • knowledge and preservation of natural resources derived from plant biomass, their specific characteristics and biodiversity.
  • diversifying the sources of natural products that can be valorised in order to broaden the range of products on offer.
  • to the structuring and development of sectors by providing decision-making tools for professionals as well as for economic and political decision-makers.

Characterising agri-resources, monitoring their quality and identifying any regional characteristics requires the most effective methods of preparation and analysis.

We will illustrate this issue with work carried out in our laboratory on Corsican Immortelle (Helichrysum italicum subsp italicum). We will look at the genetic variability of the plant, describe the study of the essential oil (chemical composition and variability, specificity) and present some biological properties. In addition, as part of the structuring of a genuine economic sector, the insufficient availability of plant material in the biotope has led us to optimise the conditions for organic cultivation in order to increase the production of essential oil while reducing the plundering of spontaneous resources.
