Partenariat renouvelé entre l’Université de Guyane et l’Université Anton de Kom du Suriname

On 1 April, the partnership between the University of French Guiana and Surinam's ANTON DE KOM University (ADEKUS) was renewed for a further 5 years with the signing of a new framework agreement linking the two higher education establishments.

D s early as 2015, the University of Guyana embarked on a contractualisation process with its border universities (Federal University of Amapa in March; ANTON University of KOM in April). This partnership has led to a number of initiatives between the two institutions, including the following:

  • Bilateral exploratory missions by delegations of teachers and students,
  • The organisation of a day of multidisciplinary scientific exchanges on cross-border issues between Guyana and Suriname,
  • The UG participates in SURINAME SCHOLARSHIP student fairs,
  • Scientific missions in literature, geology, the environment, education sciences and coastal geomorphology;
  • Conferences on environmental law, fisheries ecology and economics;
  • Lectures and conferences in history, society and interculturality, English studies (in particular via digital teaching: COIL connected courses);
  • Supervision of master's and doctoral students in tourism,
  • Or joint scientific publications...

The aim of the new 2021-2026 agreement is to develop even more collaborative projects related to education and research and to encourage mobility for students, lecturers and administrative staff. Bringing doctoral schools closer together and developing joint cultural and sporting events are also priorities.

The favourable diplomatic context, in particular with the establishment of the Total company in Suriname and the desire to develop French language learning in Suriname, will be conducive to this university rapprochement.

The renewal of this framework agreement between the University of French Guiana and ANTON DE KOM University in Suriname is part of a more ambitious approach: that of gradually building a university network across the Guiana Shield (French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana and Brazil).
