Created in 2017, the Young Guyanese Writer competition is organised every two years by the Bachelor of Arts team at the University of Guyana, to encourage students' writing and creativity. The third edition of the competition has now been launched.
E n March 2020, despite the health crisis, the competition was maintained. The theme chosen at the time, that of "memory(s)", provided the participants with inspiration that gave rise to some very fine texts. As in previous years, the competition is open to all students at the University of Guyana, regardless of the degree in which they are enrolled. There are three constraints: form, theme and length.
We're inviting you to write a short story or poem. This year's theme is "territory(ies)". Your text must not exceed 8,500 characters (including spaces).
Texts are due by 10 November 2022 at the following address CONCOURSJEG@gmail.com.
The awards ceremony will take place on Monday 28 November at 12.15pm in room F001. Six prizes will be awarded, three in the Short Story category and three in the Poetry category. The two authors who win first prize will receive a 50-euro voucher to spend in one of the "Librairies de Guyane" (the Cas'à Bulles in Cayenne, the Lettres d'Amazonie in Rémire-Montjoly or the Librairie du Vieux-Bourg in Kourou). The authors whose texts come second and third in the two categories will be rewarded with vouchers worth 30 and 20 euros respectively.
Finally, the Bachelor of Arts team would like to extend its warmest thanks to the young artist Oriana Dalmat, who created the original poster for the competition especially for the occasion.
Students, get writing!
