The University of Guyana is in the process of drawing up its student life master plan. This is a crucial stage in the ongoing improvement of living conditions for students. In order to actively involve stakeholders and gather innovative ideas, a seminar dedicated to student life was recently organised on 16 and 17 November 2023.
The main aim of the seminar was to bring together different perspectives and expertise to inform the process of developing the student life master plan. Sub-objectives included creating a space for open dialogue, promoting innovation and defining priorities for improving student life. Discussions focused on three crucial themes: welcoming students, a dynamic campus life and student well-being, with a particular emphasis on inclusion.
A participatory seminar to co-construct a bold master plan
The active participation of students was at the heart of the seminar. Students' experiences, concerns and suggestions were essential in identifying the specific challenges they face on a daily basis. Interactive pre-seminar workshops, round tables and presentations enabled students to share their ideas and make a significant contribution to the development of the master plan.
Thematic workshops were organised to explore specific issues such as student accommodation, access to health services, access to culture and many others. These workshops encouraged in-depth discussions and generated concrete ideas for improving student life.
The student life seminar proved to be a dynamic and participative forum, bringing together diverse and passionate stakeholders. By joining forces, the participants laid the foundations for a promising master plan that aims to significantly improve student life and create a more enriching educational environment for all.
