Mathematics Week 2026 at the University of Guyana is taking place from 14 to 25 March on the theme of «Equalities». Three scientific conferences open to the public will be held in person and by videoconference to promote research and mathematical culture.

Every year, Mathematics Week celebrates mathematics through educational and scientific events. In 2026, the University of Guyana is playing an active part in this national initiative by offering several conferences open to the public.

The 2026 edition runs from 14 to 25 March and focuses on the theme of «Equalities». This theme invites us to reflect on the fundamental role of equality in mathematical reasoning, but also on its applications in many scientific fields.

On this occasion, lecturers and specialists will present their work and share their thoughts at conferences organised on campus. The lectures will be accessible both in person and by videoconference.

A 2026 theme focusing on equalities in mathematics

Equalities« is a central concept in mathematics. It enables us to understand the relationships between different expressions, structures or phenomena.

An equality can express a mathematical identity, a logical equivalence or a structural relationship between mathematical objects. It is therefore at the heart of many scientific demonstrations and models.

This theme also opens up interdisciplinary perspectives. It provides an opportunity to address issues relating to education, modelling and the analysis of natural phenomena.

Conference on 16 March 2026: Equalities in mathematics

The first lecture will take place on Monday 16 March 2026 from 2pm to 4pm (Guyana time). It will be led by Silvère Paul NUIRO, HDR lecturer at the University of Guyana.

Entitled «Equalities in mathematics: identity, equivalence and structure», this talk will offer an in-depth look at the notion of equality in mathematics.

The conference will take place in amphitheatre A and will be accessible both face-to-face and remotely.

Conference on 17 March 2026: mental arithmetic practices

The second lecture will take place on Tuesday 17 March 2026, also from 2pm to 4pm. It will be presented by Manuel Garçon, a doctor in mathematics and member of INSPE in Martinique.

This talk will focus on «Mental arithmetic practices: a comparative analysis of Martinique and Senegal». It will analyse the teaching methods used in different educational contexts.

The aim is to gain a better understanding of strategies for learning mental arithmetic and their impact on academic success. The conference will be offered as a distance learning session and broadcast in amphitheatre A.

Conference on 19 March 2026: modelling and the environment

The third lecture will take place on Thursday 19 March 2026 from 2pm to 4pm. It will be led by Alain Pietrus, professor of mathematics at the University of Guyana.

Her talk is entitled «Modelling the effects of human pressure and climate change on forest biomass». She will discuss the use of mathematical models to analyse changes in forest ecosystems.

This conference will illustrate how mathematics contributes to understanding environmental issues. It will take place in amphitheatre C and will be accessible both face-to-face and by videoconference.

A scientific event open to students and the public

Mathematics Week 2026 at the University of Guyana is aimed at students, teachers and anyone interested in scientific culture.

The hybrid format makes it easy to take part in conferences, whether on campus or remotely. This accessibility means that mathematical knowledge can be disseminated more widely.

In addition to the conferences, this event also helps to promote the scientific research being carried out in French Guiana and to encourage vocations in scientific disciplines.

The University of Guyana's Mathematics Week 2026 will be highlighting the wealth of research and ideas around the theme of «Equalities». Through three conferences accessible in person and by videoconference, this event offers a scientific and educational look at mathematics. Students, teachers and science enthusiasts are invited to take part and discover how mathematics helps us to understand the world. Don't hesitate to attend the conferences to expand your knowledge and exchange ideas with researchers.
