An ambitious vision
The research strategy of the University of French Guiana aims to position itself as a reference centre for higher education and research in French Guiana, by coordinating the actions of local players and strengthening its international partnerships. The University aims to become a leader in the research and development of Amazonian biodiversity, whether human, ecosystemic or molecular, by integrating environmental, social and economic issues that are unique to the region. It seeks to develop sustainable and innovative solutions, combining fundamental and applied research, to meet global challenges while preserving the Amazon's natural resources.
Priority themes for major transitions
The University of French Guyana focuses on four key areas of research in order to meet the global challenges of sustainability and the specific characteristics of the region:
- Biodiversity and natural resources from genetics to ecosystems (forestry, agronomy, marine, coastal, river) and sustainable food.
- Global health Health ecology in tropical environments.
- Amazonian companies social dynamics and sustainable land management.
- Technological innovations Bio-inspired technologies and sustainable construction in the Amazon environment.
Strategic objectives for the region
- Responding to the social challenges facing French Guiana and establishing a local presence.
- Developing shared research infrastructures and improving the organisation of research to achieve excellence.
- Promoting sustainable innovation by harnessing the knowledge and skills of the Amazonian people.
- Strengthen internationalisation, by positioning itself as the European University of Amazonia.
The means to achieve its ambitions: the DIRVED
The strong development and deployment of the University of Guyana has naturally led to the development of its research unit into a real department whose ambitions are to encourage better integration of all the activities dedicated to research and its various applications: engineering, development, innovation, doctoral school and partnerships.
The Department of International Affairs, Research, Development and Doctoral Studies (DIRVED) promotes and develops the results of university research and provides a genuine support service for its researchers. via operational units that work in synergy and across disciplines. This central, cross-functional department offers project sponsors a wide range of services, from scientific and technical monitoring to support in setting up projects and final contracts, as well as protecting research results and registering patents. It is also involved in implementing the AIBSI (Amazonian Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainable Innovation) project in conjunction with its Sustainable Innovation Department (SID), which aims to create a genuine signature for the university site based on Amazonian biodiversity, and offers personalised support to all project leaders wishing to steer their career towards entrepreneurship, thanks to its university incubation unit.
Finally, the International Relations Office has recently joined the management team, as part of our commitment to international outreach and a strong presence in the Amazon macro-region.
