Les esclavages d'hier, an exhibition on display in the reading rooms of the university library, from 1 to 30 June 2022
D hroughout the month of June 2022, the BU is commemorating the abolition of slavery, proclaimed in 1848, with an educational exhibition featuring 16 panels on slavery in the past: slavery from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, the triangular trade, slavery in the Americas, abolition in France, abolition in the United States, etc.
The abolition of slavery is commemorated in French Guiana every year on 10 June. As part of this celebration, the university library is pleased to present an exhibition on the many forms of slavery practised in the past, whether in Antiquity, in the Middle Ages or in its most well-known form in the modern world: the triangular trade. The exhibition will also address the issue not of abolition, but of the successive abolition of slavery in different parts of the world.
Richly illustrated, this exhibition will take you on a journey through time and place in an attempt to gain a global understanding of the issues surrounding slavery, in order to establish a nuanced and well-documented comparison between the different forms taken by this system of human exploitation. At a time when the scars of slavery are still painful, and when it is resurfacing in different parts of the world, looking back to better understand the future seems a necessary step.
