Les docteurs de l’Université de Guyane mis à l’honneur

For the first time since its creation, the University of Guyana is honouring its doctorates by organising its first doctoral degree and thesis prize award ceremony. The ceremony took place on Thursday 7 July 2022 at 5.30pm in the Edmond Antoine-Edouard de l'Encre Auditorium.

C' t was with great emotion and pride that the doctors present at the ceremony received their diplomas. Dressed in their gowns for this memorable event, each doctor was honoured, and for this very special occasion, the laboratories, the graduates' families, players from the socio-economic world, colleagues and other friends came together to celebrate the success of these young doctors.

Marie-Anne Clair, Director of the Centre Spatial Guyanais, and Elie Stéphenson, economist and famous Guyanese poet and playwright, honoured us by being the godmother and godfather respectively of this first edition of the event. The doctorate is the highest form of university education, and a bridge between the academic world and research. It symbolises the essence of knowledge, which is why it was important not only to honour these first graduating classes, but also to raise the profile of this degree, which is still little known to the general public.587 is a multidisciplinary doctoral school, and for this unique occasion, all disciplines were honoured: law, economics, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, earth sciences, history, agronomy...

The ceremony provided an opportunity to promote university education and academic excellence, as well as research, particularly research in French Guiana. This excellence was particularly highlighted by the award of two thesis prizes. Marc-Alexandre Tareau won the Humanities, Society and Health prize for his research into "Les pharmacopées métissées de Guyane: ethnobotanique d'une phytothérapie en mouvement" ("The mixed pharmacopoeias of French Guiana: ethnobotany of a phytotherapy on the move"). Weiwen Jiang won the Natural, Technological and Environmental Sciences prize for her research into the "chemical and pollen characterisation of honeys from French Guiana".

The University of Guyana would also like to thank all its partners who helped to make this event a success: Casden, CNES, EPCC les 3 Fleuves, Guyanasso, Guyane la 1ère, MGEN and Voltalia.
