On Tuesday 2 July, the University of French Guiana and ARS Guyane signed an agreement to strengthen health research and support the creation of new healthcare and training facilities in French Guiana.
Mn Tuesday 2 July, a new milestone for the future of health in French Guiana was reached with the signing of a partnership agreement between the University of French Guiana (UG) and the French Guiana Regional Health Agency (ARS Guyane). The event, which took place in the presence of Laurent LINGUET, President of the University of French Guiana, and Dimitri GRYGOWSKI, Director General of ARS Guyane, marks the start of a promising collaboration to promote health research in the region.
A shared vision for improving healthcare provision in French Guyana
This agreement is part of a concerted effort to develop and improve healthcare provision in French Guyana. The University of French Guiana and the ARS share common objectives and are committed to the creation of three major structures: a University Hospital Centre (CHU), a Joint Health Research Unit (UMR Santé des Populations en Amazonie) and a Health Training and Research Unit (UFR Sciences Médicales et de la Santé).
Financial support for a strong commitment
The agreement signed specifies the terms and conditions under which the ARS will provide financial support to the University of Guyana over the period 2024-2029. This support will take the form of funding for five full post-doctoral grants per year, each lasting three years. These grants will enable researchers to be recruited into local research units or as part of international partnerships that will have a significant impact on the Guyanese healthcare system or the healthcare research ecosystem. In addition, the ARS will contribute to the operating costs of the post-doctoral researchers, covering in particular missions, consumables and publications.
Clear and ambitious objectives
For the University of Guyana, this agreement represents a unique opportunity to strengthen its health research capabilities and increase the attractiveness of its research structures. By supporting research projects that meet the specific needs of the region, the UG intends to strengthen the continuum of education, research, innovation and development, in line with local and Amazonian health issues.
For its part, ARS Guyane wants to help strengthen Guyana's health research base, encourage the recruitment of highly qualified researchers and raise their international profile. This partnership will also make it possible to provide financial support for the region's research units, to support innovative research programmes that meet local needs, and to promote the academic influence of the future University Hospital of French Guiana. Innovation in healthcare is at the heart of this collaboration, with the ambition of transforming the region's healthcare landscape over the long term.
The signing of this agreement marks a decisive turning point for health research in French Guiana, with positive spin-offs expected for both the scientific community and local residents.
