AIBSI: an ambitious deployment for research and development in Amazonia

Par 26/11/2024- AIBSI3 min. de lecture

On Thursday 14 November, the University of French Guiana hosted the steering committee (COPIL) of AIBSI, the Amazon Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainable Innovation, for an informative annual review. Around the table were the project's key partners (CTG, CNES, GDI, IFREMER, CNRS, CIRAD, INRAE, IRD, IPG), in the presence of the DRRT and the French National Research Agency.

A stronger network and international ambitions

The year 2024 marked a turning point for AIBSI with the integration of new members, consolidating its network. The COPIL has set a clear course: the internationalisation of the project, based on the continuum of research, training, development and society. This opening extends to Brazil and the Guyana Plateau, with active scientific diplomacy to meet the common challenges of ecological transition and climate change.

Innovative projects for a sustainable future

During the meeting, a progress report was presented. Among the major achievements:

  • The effective launch of the "Impact of climate change on biodiversity" scientific chair.
  • 13 research projects underway in key areas such as sustainable food, global health and eco-construction.
  • 4 doctoral contracts, enabling four new doctoral students to be accepted in various UG research units.
  • A series of science communication training courses and events for students and local businesses.
  • Active support from AIBSI's sustainable innovation department for researchers and entrepreneurs, in collaboration with Guyane Développement Innovation.

Greater ambitions for 2025

Discussions led to the definition of an ambitious work programme for 2025, backed by a multi-year budget of €1 million up to 2027. This programme aims to :

  • Intensifying international research on our Amazonian scientific issues with academic partners in the macro-region, the Amazon and elsewhere.
  • Supporting local research in line with local needs.
  • Developing the Comm'on Lab and the SID as interactive spaces for bringing science and society closer together, better aligning research with Guiana's priorities and making the most of it to support the development of sustainable economic activities.

An expanding consortium

The event was marked by the official signing of IRD's membership of the AIBSI consortium, with the University of Guyana as lead partner. The Institut Pasteur also expressed its intention to join this ambitious initiative.

Towards a French Guiana at the heart of global research

With strengthened momentum and solid prospects, AIBSI continues to establish itself as a key player in supporting sustainable human development in the Amazon. By focusing on international collaboration and innovation, the consortium is paving the way for a future where science and society work together to meet the major challenges of our time.
