
On 2 May 2025, the University of Guyana reached a historic milestone. The Board of the UFR des Sciences Médicales et de la Santé (SMS) met for a decisive session.
At this meeting, the members unanimously elected Professor Pierre Couppié as their first Chairman. Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. This appointment marks the official establishment of the governance of this new university structure. Professor Mathieu Nacher was also unanimously elected Vice-Dean.
The SMS UFR is the very first Training and Research Unit at the University of Guyana. Its creation illustrates a clear desire to strengthen health training locally. It is also part of the future University Hospital Centre (CHU) of French Guyana. On this occasion, the Board expressed unanimous support for the constituent agreement of the CHU, with 18 votes in favour and no abstentions or opposition.
Thanks to this double election, the University is confirming its ambition to offer training adapted to the realities of the region. The university, hospital and regional players have joined forces to build a common project. This symbolic moment demonstrates the collective commitment to high-quality healthcare training. The election of the Dean of the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences opens a new page in the history of higher education in French Guyana.
In conclusion, this structural advance will directly benefit future healthcare professionals and the local population as a whole.
