The study analyses data from a survey carried out by the University of French Guiana between December 2023 and March 2024.
It focuses on four priority thematic areas identified as part of the development of the UG’s student life master plan: student organisations and civic engagement; health, wellbeing and social support; accommodation and transport; and sport and culture.

37 % students say they are satisfied with their rent or their contribution towards their accommodation: 14 % say they are very satisfied and 23 % say they are fairly satisfied.
Students are generally satisfied with bicycles and motorised two-wheelers. Satisfaction with bicycles is higher, particularly in terms of price and travel range.
Private cars are the highest-rated mode of transport, regardless of the criterion, with the exception of cost.
Public transport comes in for the most criticism, particularly for its lack of flexibility, journey times, comfort and the lack of independence associated with this mode of travel.
Nearly half of students rated their health as satisfactory in 2023–2024. Nearly one in seven students rated it as very satisfactory.
For more than three-quarters of students, civic engagement means working to promote social justice, equal rights and the fight against discrimination. A similar proportion see it as participating in projects aimed at improving the quality of life in their immediate or wider local area. Voting in elections comes in third place, cited by 72 % of students. More protest-oriented forms of engagement, such as marches, rallies, demonstrations or lobbying political decision-makers, are less frequently perceived as representative of civic engagement.
Almost all respondents consider it important for young people to get involved in voluntary organisations. This view becomes even more pronounced the higher up the age pyramid one goes.
