The Cordées de la Réussite is an equal opportunities scheme designed to support young people in their educational and professional careers. The initiative now extends beyond the final year of secondary school to the 4th year of secondary school, with the aim of encouraging young people to aspire to higher education at an early age and combating self-censorship.
T hile the Cordées de la Réussite programme in French Guiana is often limited to students in their final year of secondary school, its aim is to reach out to a wider audience, particularly secondary school students in Year 4. The aim is clear: to encourage young people to pursue their ambitions for higher education at an early stage and to combat the self-censorship that can sometimes hold back their aspirations. The scheme is committed to demystifying higher education and fostering the ambition to pursue further study from secondary school onwards.
Concrete actions to inspire ambition
The main actions put in place reflect the Cordées de la Réussite's commitment to broadening young people's horizons from secondary school onwards:
Visits and meetings in schools
Speakers meet students to present the careers and courses offered by the University of Guyana (UG). This direct interaction helps to arouse the curiosity of young people and inform them about the various possibilities open to them.
Immersion at university
Pupils have the opportunity to find out more about the university. Tours of the campus and in-depth presentations of the life and earth sciences (L&E) laboratories are organised, specially designed for science courses.
Careers forums
Career forums give young people the chance to find out more directly from working professionals. These discussions help them to gain an in-depth understanding of the different professions and their requirements.
Personalised tutoring
Student tutors, depending on their course of study, play an essential role in supporting students. This personalised tutoring aims to guide young people in their career choices by sharing their experiences and answering their questions.
Testimonials from alumni as mentors
Former students, who are now accomplished professionals, are invited to share their experiences as testimonial tutors. These testimonials provide a concrete perspective on the possibilities for career development after higher education.
