From 2 to 6 June 2025, students at public higher education institutions will be asked to elect their representatives to the Conseil National de l'Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche (CNESER). This consultative body, which reports to the ministry, plays a key role in the strategic direction of higher education in France.

The CNESER: a key body for students

The CNESER is involved in major issues relating to higher education and research establishments. It provides a forum for dialogue between students, universities and the Ministry, ensuring that the needs and expectations of students are taken into account in public decision-making.

How do the elections work?

1. Election of electors (GE)

Each university must elect its grand electors from among the students elected to the central councils (CA and CAC). These elected students must nominate 4 electors. The order setting out the terms and conditions has been posted and sent to the student representatives..

2 Election of student representatives to the CNESER

Voters will then vote to appoint student representatives to the CNESER for a two-year term.

What is a major voter?

A "grand électeur" is a student elected from among the student representatives on the central councils of his or her university. Their role is to take part in national elections by standing as a candidate and/or voting for the student representatives on the CNESER, thereby guaranteeing student representation at national level.

National election calendar

  • From 17 February to 25 February (at 12 noon) Nominations submitted by students elected to the central councils.
  • 11 March 2025: Polling day (election of grand electors)
  • Displaying results : No later than 3 days after the vote
  • From 2 April to 2 May 2025 Submission of applications (each EG will receive one by e-mail).
  • 16 May 2025 (at the latest) : Voting identifiers and instructions sent to electors.
  • From 2 June (12 noon, Paris time) to 6 June 2025 (12 noon, Paris time) Electronic ballot via legavote.
  • 6 June 2025 from 3pm (Paris time) Counting of votes and announcement of results.

Why is this election important?

These elections enable students to have a voice at national level and to influence decisions concerning higher education and research. A strong mobilisation of student representatives is essential to ensure that students are represented in a way that meets the challenges.
