Temps des Mémoires 2026 brings together researchers, artists and citizens to explore the legacy of slavery in French Guiana. Following a conference on 23 May 2026 in Cayenne, the University of French Guiana is continuing its programme with immersive and cultural workshops open to the public.
A programme dedicated to collective memories
As part of the commemoration of the abolition of slavery, the University of Guyana is pursuing its commitment to issues of memory, transmission and collective history with «Temps des Mémoires 2026». This initiative is led by the MINEA research unit in collaboration with several institutional partners.
Since May 2026, a number of cultural and scientific events have been on offer to the public to encourage discussion of historical legacies, cultural identities and contemporary social issues.
A first conference organised in Cayenne
The first highlight of this year's event took place on Saturday 23 May 2026 at the EnCre EPCC Les Trois Fleuves in Cayenne. This conference-debate brought together researchers, cultural players and a large number of participants to discuss issues relating to the history and memory of slavery.
The discussions focused in particular on the psychological, social and cultural consequences inherited from slavery. Participants also compared experiences of remembrance in French Guiana, the French- and English-speaking West Indies and mainland France.
Dominique Floret, a specialist in interculturality, criminal sciences and psychotrauma, was the guest speaker at this meeting. She presented a number of analyses on the transmission of historical trauma and the mechanisms of symbolic and social reparation.
An interactive treasure hunt on the Troubiran campus
The University of Guyana will be continuing its «Temps des Mémoires 2026» programme on Saturday 6 June 2026 with an interactive treasure hunt organised on the Troubiran campus.
This immersive activity will enable participants to discover nineteen major figures in the abolitionist struggles and emancipation movements in the Americas, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean.
Through an educational trail, the public will be invited to gain a better understanding of the battles fought for freedom and human rights. The aim is to pass on history in a different way and to encourage a living appropriation of collective memories.
An artistic workshop on the memory of slavery
On Wednesday 10 June 2026, an artistic painting workshop will be held in partnership with the École d'art de Guyane. Participants will be able to express their emotions and thoughts on the memory of slavery and its abolition.
Video screenings, collective exchanges and open discussions will accompany this artistic process. The workshop has been designed as a space for dialogue, mutual understanding and sharing.
A project focused on living together
Beyond the commemorative aspect, «Temps des Mémoires 2026» is part of a wider reflection on cultural heritages and the challenges facing society. The project is entitled «Our legacies: Cultures, Philosophies and Societies - Me and others: the challenges of today and tomorrow».
This programme is supported by a number of institutional partners, including the Collectivité Territoriale de Guyane, the Fondation pour la Mémoire de l'Esclavage, the Communauté d'Agglomération du Centre Littoral and the Direction Culture, Jeunesse et Sports de Guyane.
Through these events, the University of French Guiana is confirming its desire to bring together research, culture and citizenship around issues of remembrance. The aim is also to strengthen the transmission of knowledge and to promote social cohesion in Guianese society.
With «Temps des Mémoires 2026», the University of Guyana is continuing its vital work on history, transmission and cultural heritage. Through lectures, artistic workshops and immersive activities, this programme invites the public to gain a better understanding of collective memories and the issues they face today. Local residents are invited to take part in the next series of events, to be held in June, to extend the discussions on living together and citizenship.
