The University of Guyana recently held its regional final of the "My thesis in 180 seconds" competition, on Tuesday 5 March 2024 at 4pm, in the Edmond Antoine-Edouard auditorium at ENCRE. Emmanuelle CLERVIL and Thibault LAFFARGUE gave brilliant performances in this year's competition, and were voted winners by the jury and the public.
L he competition brought together ten candidates, each given three minutes to present the results of their research in a concise and punchy manner. In front of a panel of judges made up of scientists, personalities from the socio-economic world and journalists, as well as a diverse audience, the participants brilliantly demonstrated their oratorical talent and scientific expertise.
Emmanuelle CLERVIL, from the Institut Pasteur, won over the jury with her thesis entitled "Feasibility and acceptability of the Wolbachia method in French Guiana: a plea for an alternative and innovative vector control method", while Thibault LAFFARGUE, from the USR Mixte LEEISA, was acclaimed by the public for his thesis entitled "The role of the microbiome in explaining the success of invasive species".
This year, the regional final adopted a hybrid format, allowing the public to attend the presentations in person at l'Encre or to follow them live from home via the Facebook pages of the University and its partner Guyane la 1ère. What's more, the interactive aspect of the event was enhanced by the possibility offered both to the public in attendance and to Internet users to vote online for their favourite candidate, adding a participative and engaging dimension to the competition.
Following this victory, Emmanuelle and Thibault will have the opportunity to proudly represent our region at the national semi-final to be held in Paris from 28 to 30 March. We warmly encourage them and wish them all the best for this next stage.
Save the date! the dates of the next stages of the MT180S competition: the national final will take place on 5 June in Nice, followed by the international final on 18 November in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.
Finally, we would like to express our deep gratitude to our partners who have made this event possible: Air France, CNES, CNRS, EPCC les Trois Fleuves, Guyane la 1ère, MGEN, Orange and SGDE. Thank you for your unfailing support for research and innovation.
