Objectives

The prevalence of diabetes worldwide continues to rise, doubling in the last 10 years. In 2016, there were 422 million diabetics worldwide, including 5.1 million in France. In French Guyana, the problem is a priority in terms of public health, with an estimated prevalence of around 8%. Being overweight and genetic and environmental factors are probably major factors in our region. Complications of diabetes are unfortunately responsible for a high morbidity and mortality rate, with one diabetic dying every 7 seconds worldwide. The training of healthcare professionals is fundamental to improving patient care. Theoretical knowledge and national best practice guidelines are key to the success of effective primary and secondary prevention. Early detection of complications requires rigour in the initial assessment of diabetic patients. The aim of the course is to teach healthcare professionals the basic skills they need to diagnose and treat diabetes and its complications. The teaching combines the fundamental pre-requisite units needed for practice with units of direct application to the care of diabetics.
