Created by ministerial decree in 1986 at the request of CNES, the University Institute of Technology (IUT) in KOUROU opened its first department (GEII) in 1988. The IUT in Kourou offers short, high-quality professional courses at the University. These professional courses, which are directly tailored to the local job market and employment structure, also enable students to continue their studies at prestigious higher education institutions (engineering, business, etc.) and LMD (bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees). To date, the IUT has nearly 200 students spread across two sites, in seven courses (four BUTs and three professional bachelor's degrees at the start of the 2015 academic year) .
