Objectives

The bachelor's degree in History from the University of Guyana is a national diploma offering a comprehensive and rewarding course in the humanities and social sciences. Aimed at students wishing to understand the major transformations of the world over the centuries, this course of study is distinguished by its balance between academic rigour and preparation for the world of work, while promoting an international outlook.

By choosing this course, students acquire much more than a degree: they develop a critical view of the world, an ability to adapt and a versatility that is recognised in many professional fields.

The aim of the History degree is to provide students with a solid scientific culture, enabling them to sharpen their critical faculties and better decipher and understand the historical, cultural and geopolitical issues that shape our societies. This rigorous training also aims to give them solid methodological tools, while encouraging a multidisciplinary approach that enables them to establish connections between the fields of history, geography, social sciences and digital humanities.

These scientific and technical skills enable History graduates to work in a wide range of professional sectors, while providing them with a solid foundation for pursuing higher education at Masters level.


 Technical skills :

  1. Critical analysis and interpretation :
    • Ability to analyse a variety of documents (texts, images, maps, statistical data) to draw relevant conclusions.
    • Deciphering and interpreting complex events
  2. Research methodology :
    • Knowing how to construct issues, structure research and develop a solid argument
    • Mastery of documentary research techniques (use of libraries, digital databases and archives).
  3. Use of digital tools :
    • Familiarity with modern tools such as digital mapping software and geographic information systems (GIS).
    • Skills in managing and analysing historical digital data.
  4. Writing and communication :
    • Writing clear, well-structured argumentative texts (essays, dissertations, research reports).
    • Ability to present results orally or in writing, using appropriate media.

  • An introduction to archaeology and the profession of archivist
  • An introduction to modern tools such as digital cartography and geographic information systems (GIS)

Recruitment level : Bac + 1

Admission requirements Licence 1 applicants must go through the Parcoursup application, whether they have passed their baccalaureate this year or are transferring, on the dates set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. At the beginning of the year, a compulsory placement test is organised for all L1 students. This test is used to identify students who need to join the success support scheme. The scheme is inclusive: students who pass all their exams are admitted directly to L2, as are students who do not need this methodological and subject-specific support.

Applicants for L2 and L3 must use the E-Candidat application at the University of Guyana

  • Modern and contemporary European history (72 hours, 7 ECTS)
  • Related social sciences 3: Physical geography, environment and societies (52 hours, 6 ECTS)
  • Professional and IT skills (24 hours, 2 ECTS)
  • Preparation for higher education: refresher course in French and English (48 hours, 0 ECTS, must be validated before transfer to L1b)

Semester 1b

  • Introduction to Ancient and Medieval History (56 hours, 7 ECTS)
  • Related Social Sciences 2: Archaeology (36 hours, 4 ECTS)

  • Global history of Europe up to 1453 (72 hours, 7 ECTS)

  • History of empires (124 hours, 16 ECTS)
  • History and civilisations of the Americas (52 hours, 7 ECTS)
  • Professional Social Sciences 2 (Environment and Society and ECL) (70 hours, 7 ECTS)

Semester 5

  • History of the environment and populations (124 hours, 16 ECTS)
  • Professional social sciences 3: Geography: digital cartography and GIS (44 hours, 5 ECTS)
  • Social sciences and teaching (46 hours, 5 ECTS)
  • LVE-LVR (English and a second language of choice) (48 hours, 4 ECTS)

Semester 6

  • Economic and institutional history (124 hours, 16 ECTS)
  • Geography of the South (48 hours, 7 ECTS)
  • Introduction to historical research: epistemology, historiography, palaeography (54 or 72 hours, 7 ECTS)

Compulsory 1 week work placement in L3.

Job opportunities

  • Education and teaching: preparing for an MEEF Master's degree in order to become a history-geography teacher in secondary schools, a school teacher or a trainer in educational establishments.
  • Heritage and culture :  work as a cultural mediator or guide in museums, historic sites and interpretation centres, or apply for professional training to become an archivist (BUT or Licence professionnelle).
  • Communication and journalism : take competitive exams at journalism schools and/or join specialist media or agencies to produce content with a high historical value.
  • Research and documentation : hold positions in libraries, archives or research institutes as an expert or consultant.
  • Civil service preparing for 3-year higher education entrance examinations to join public institutions
  • Non-governmental organisations and associations : Joining NGOs, international bodies or associations, where historical and analytical knowledge is particularly sought after.
