Work-linked training at the University of French Guiana: a campus of excellence in the heart of Amazonia
At the heart of the Amazon, the University of French Guiana has made work-linked training a key part of its vision. In Cayenne, as in its extensions in Kourou, Saint-Laurent and Saint-Georges, everything is designed to bring together training and the professional world, and to support a pool of talented young people on their way to employment.
Modern buildings for work-linked training (Cayenne)
The Cayenne campus consists of four recent buildings dedicated to training, all of which comply with safety standards. Their contemporary architecture, frescoes and open spaces overlooking nature create a motivating working environment for work-study students. The buildings include :
- four amphitheatres for lectures, business conferences and meetings with companies; ;
- In each building, there are several modular computer rooms suitable for projects, group work and examinations; ;
- a research building for practical work and experiments, as well as four research laboratories linking work-linked training, innovation and local needs.
A large, busy library offers a quiet environment, a wealth of digital resources and workspaces adapted to the rhythms of sandwich courses. A digital platform and online timetables make it easy for students to organise their time between work and university.
A campus life that supports the pace of work-study students
Because work-linked training requires energy and balance, the university offers a wide range of facilities to help you feel good:
- sports and cultural activities) supervised by the SUAPS and the Culture Commission;
- modular university restaurant for galas and work-linked events; ;
- cafeteria, ;
- health and well-being: Student Health Service, with a doctor and a nurse, for comprehensive support.
Student associations, student projects, team-building days, educational trips and a language resource centre reinforce cross-disciplinary skills. The university also offers training in soft skills (communication, emotional intelligence, professional posture, etc.) for work-study students.
A teaching community focused on the professional world
The diversity of teaching staff is the strength of the sandwich course at the University of Guyana. The teaching staff includes: PUs, MCFs, PRAGs, PRCEs, associate lecturers, ATERs, as well as external contributors, experts, professionals, company directors, lawyers, accountants, etc.
This complementarity of profiles means that :
- training content rooted in the realities of the field;
- a better understanding of employers' expectations;
- practical support for work-study students in their assignments and career plans.
Extensions to bring work-linked training closer to local areas
To facilitate access to courses and work-linked training, the university has extensions in Kourou, Saint-Laurent and Saint-Georges.
- At Saint-Georges, the training courses are currently based on the media library, which is used as a place for lessons, work and support for work-study students, as close as possible to local realities.
- In Saint-Laurent, the university has set up the Campus connecté, which enables students on work-linked training schemes to follow their course either face-to-face or remotely, while remaining rooted in their local area and host company.
The university organises events and meetings with local leaders to understand the real needs of the region and provide information about work-linked training schemes. The infrastructure is only just beginning to be developed, and the university is determined to strengthen and extend it.
Kourou: a technical site focused on the professions of tomorrow
At Kourou, some of the buildings date from the 1980s, others from the 2000s, but the facilities are resolutely modern and adapted to courses specific to French Guiana, which are essential for work-linked training:
- Technology hall dedicated to civil engineering for public works and projects; ;
- fully-equipped engineering rooms for telecoms networks and electrical engineering;
- state-of-the-art computer rooms (iMac, 3D printers, etc.).
The well-being and success of work-study students are supported by a university canteen, a catering room and a technical library. Finally, a building dedicated to research and an amphitheatre are planned, confirming the University of Guyana's ambition to continue its development in the service of students, the region and excellence in work-linked training.
